Level 3: Substantive Editing/$85 per hour
Substantive editing, or content editing, involves mechanics, style, and substance of existing content. A nonfiction editor may comment on word choice or suggest rephrasing to eliminate ambiguity or strengthen the cohesiveness of certain passages. In a fictional work, the editor may suggest revisions to limit exposition, improve dialogue, develop characters, or advance the plot--all in keeping with the author's vision. Substantive editing is performed when an author request "a heavy edit" and requires no more than 20% of the manuscript to be rewritten. Author's cost is $85 per hour with a 50-consecutive page minimum for non-technical material. (Academic, healthcare, or technical materials have different pricing and a separate checkout button.) One page = 250 words. Payment in advance is required. No refunds for substantive editing services will be given. We suggest new clients contract for one chapter to test the author/editor relationship before submitting their entire manuscript. Submit manuscripts using the Upload MS page listed under the Contact Us tab. Please email us in advance to schedule a series of telephone consultation appointments to keep your book-length project on track. Thanks for choosing Written by a Pro.
